Why Is My Steering Wheel Vibrating? Bilston Garage Explains

5 April 2026 · 5 min read

When it happens is the biggest clue

The conditions under which the steering wheel vibrates tell us the most. A wobble that appears at a set speed on the motorway and eases above or below it usually points to wheel balance. A vibration only when braking points to the brakes. A steady shimmy all the time points to alignment or a worn part.

Noting exactly when it happens — braking, accelerating, a certain speed, or constantly — helps us diagnose it quickly instead of replacing parts on guesswork.

Wheel balance and alignment

Wheels use small balance weights to spin smoothly at speed. If a weight is lost or a tyre has worn unevenly, the wheel becomes unbalanced and the steering shakes at higher speeds. Rebalancing is a quick, inexpensive fix.

Alignment, or tracking, is different: if the wheels are not pointing straight ahead the car pulls and the tyres scrub and wear unevenly, which can cause a shimmy. Kerbs and potholes are common culprits. Correcting the alignment protects your tyres as well as curing the vibration.

When brakes or suspension are at fault

A vibration through the wheel or pedal only when braking usually means warped brake discs — heat and wear can distort a disc so it is no longer flat, felt as a pulsing under braking. Discs and pads are replaced together.

If the vibration is constant and comes with knocking or vague steering, a worn wheel bearing, ball joint, or track rod end may be to blame. These are safety-related and should be checked without delay.
