What Is Included in a Full Service? A Bilston Guide

Service versus MOT

It is worth being clear from the start: a service and an MOT are not the same thing. An MOT is a legal roadworthiness check on a fixed set of items, while a service is preventative maintenance that looks after the mechanical health of the car — changing consumables and catching wear before it becomes a breakdown.

The two work best together. Many drivers book a full service and MOT in the same visit so the legal check and the condition of the car are both covered at once.

What a full service covers

A full service is the standard annual check for most drivers, covering around 40 points. It includes an engine oil and filter change with the correct oil for your engine, an air filter replacement, and a thorough inspection of the brakes, discs, and pads.

It also covers the steering and suspension, the exhaust, all lights, wipers and washers, the battery condition, and the level and condition of the fluids — coolant, brake fluid, and power steering. You get a report on anything found, with anything extra agreed with you before it is done.

Full, interim, or major?

An interim service is a lighter check, usually every six months or 6,000 miles, aimed at higher-mileage drivers who want protection between annual services. A full service is the yearly standard. A major service adds items such as spark plugs, fuel or pollen filters, and brake fluid changes on a longer cycle.

Which you need depends on your mileage and history. Servicing to the manufacturer schedule with the correct parts and a stamped book also protects your warranty under block exemption rules — which is exactly how we work.
