Before the test — what to bring

You do not legally need any paperwork to have an MOT carried out — the tester looks the vehicle up on the DVSA system by registration. It helps to know your mileage and to mention any warning lights or issues you are already aware of, but the test itself stands on its own.

A quick check the day before saves a lot of failed tests: make sure all the bulbs work, the washer bottle is full, the wipers clear the screen, the number plates are clean and undamaged, and there is nothing obvious like a tyre below the tread limit. These simple items account for a large share of avoidable failures.

What the tester does

A standard Class 4 MOT takes around 45 minutes to an hour. The tester works through a set checklist covering the brakes, tyres and wheels, steering and suspension, lights, mirrors, wipers and washers, the horn, seatbelts, the exhaust and emissions, the fuel system, and the body and structure.

The brakes are measured on a rolling road for balance and efficiency, the emissions are tested against the limit for your engine, and the suspension is checked on a ramp. Nothing is dismantled — the MOT is a visual and functional inspection of what can be seen and measured, which is why it is not a substitute for a service.

Pass, fail, advisory — and the retest

Faults are recorded as Dangerous, Major, or Minor. A Dangerous or Major defect is a fail and the car must not be driven until it is repaired. A Minor defect is a pass with a note to keep an eye on it. An advisory is the tester flagging something that is wearing but still legal, such as brake pads or tyres getting low — your early warning to plan a repair.
