How a clutch wears out

The clutch is a friction part — every time you pull away or change gear, the clutch plate briefly slips against the flywheel and a thin layer of friction material wears away. Over tens of thousands of miles that material wears down, much like a brake pad, until it can no longer grip fully.

How long a clutch lasts depends heavily on how the car is driven. Lots of stop-start town driving, towing, or resting your foot on the pedal wears it faster, while steady motorway miles are gentler. Most clutches last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, but there is no fixed lifespan.

The warning signs

The clearest sign is slipping: the engine revs climb but the car does not accelerate in proportion, most obvious in higher gears or uphill. You may also find the biting point has moved much higher up the pedal than it used to be, a sign the clutch is worn.

Other symptoms include juddering as you pull away, a heavy or stiff pedal, trouble selecting gears, or a burning smell after pulling away on a hill. A grinding or rumble when the pedal is pressed can point to the release bearing rather than the plate.

Why prompt action saves money

A slipping clutch will not recover and tends to get worse quickly once it starts. Driving on a badly slipping clutch creates a lot of heat, which can damage the flywheel — and a damaged flywheel turns a straightforward clutch job into a much larger one.

Because the clutch sits behind the gearbox, most of the cost is the labour to reach it. That is why it makes sense to replace the clutch as a full kit and inspect the flywheel while everything is apart, rather than paying for the access twice.
