Keyless Car Theft and Ghost Immobilisers — Bilston Advice

How keyless theft works
Keyless entry is convenient, but it has created a form of theft called a relay attack. One thief stands near your house with a device that picks up the signal from your key fob indoors and relays it to a second device held by the car, fooling it into thinking the key is present. The car unlocks and starts, and it is gone in under a minute.
It needs no force, leaves no damage, and is silent. A steering lock helps and a signal-blocking pouch for your fob reduces the risk, but neither stops a thief who can already start the car.
What a ghost immobiliser is
A ghost immobiliser is a small device wired discreetly into the car that stops the engine starting unless a personal PIN sequence is entered first, using buttons the car already has such as those on the steering wheel or doors. Without that sequence, the car will not start even with the genuine key.
Because it works over the car existing data network and adds no fob or radio signal of its own, there is nothing for a thief to clone, relay, or detect. Even if they beat the factory system, the car simply will not drive.
Why it works so well
A ghost immobiliser is silent and invisible — no LED or add-on box for a thief to find. It does not affect the manufacturer warranty, can be set to ask for the PIN only when needed, and has a service mode so you can hand the car to a valet or garage without giving away your sequence.
For owners of frequently targeted models it is one of the most effective and least intrusive ways to defeat relay theft, and it pairs well with a tracker for an extra layer of protection.
