Gearbox Trouble? Warning Signs of Manual and Auto Faults

28 May 2026 · 6 min read

Why gearbox problems are worth catching early

The gearbox transmits the engine power to the wheels and takes a lot of load doing it. Small issues — low or old fluid, a worn synchro, a tired clutch feeding an auto box with the wrong shift quality — tend to grow into expensive failures if they are ignored.

Catching the early signs and acting on them often means a fluid change or a modest repair rather than a rebuilt or replacement gearbox, so it pays to take unusual noises or shift behaviour seriously.

Manual gearbox symptoms

On a manual, watch for a crunch when selecting a gear (often a worn synchromesh), difficulty getting into gear, the box jumping out of gear on its own, or a whining or humming that changes with road speed and points to worn bearings.

A notchy or stiff change can sometimes be linkage or clutch related rather than the box itself, which is why we diagnose the cause rather than assuming the worst. Getting it looked at early keeps the options — and the cost — lower.

Automatic gearbox symptoms

On an automatic, look out for jerky or harsh shifts, a delay between selecting Drive and the car moving, slipping where the revs rise without matching acceleration, or a burnt smell from overheated fluid. A warning light or the box going into a limited limp mode is also common.

Many automatic problems trace back to old, degraded transmission fluid, and a proper fluid and filter service at the right interval prevents a lot of them. Others need diagnostic work to read the fault and check the internal pressures.
