What the EGR valve does

The EGR valve recirculates a controlled amount of exhaust gas back into the engine to lower combustion temperatures and cut emissions. It is fitted to both petrol and diesel engines, but diesels tend to suffer the most trouble with it.

Because it handles hot, sooty exhaust gas, the valve slowly clogs with carbon. In time it can stick open or closed, and that is when the running problems start.

The symptoms

A valve stuck open causes a rough or lumpy idle, hesitation, and sometimes stalling. A valve stuck closed raises combustion temperatures and emissions and can log a fault code. Either way you often get the engine warning light and worse fuel economy.

The engine management system will frequently put the car into limp mode — a protective state that caps power and revs. If your car suddenly feels flat and will not rev past a certain point, a sticking EGR valve is a common cause.

Clean or replace?

Whether the valve can be cleaned or needs replacing depends on its condition. A valve that is carboned up but mechanically sound can often be removed, cleaned, and refitted — the cheaper route. One that is worn, seized, or has a failed motor or sensor needs replacing.
