Why air con stops blowing cold

Your air conditioning works by circulating a refrigerant that is compressed and expanded to pull heat out of the cabin. Every system loses a little refrigerant over time — around 10 to 15 percent a year through the seals and hoses — so after two or three years there is often not enough left to cool properly, and the air from the vents feels warm or only slightly cool.

Warm air is not always just a low charge, though. A worn compressor, a blocked condenser, a stuck flap behind the dashboard, or a leak at a pipe joint can all cause the same symptom. Topping up a system without checking why it is low simply hides the real fault, so we always diagnose before we regas.

A regas is not always the answer

A proper regas removes the old refrigerant, vacuum-tests the system to make sure it holds pressure, and recharges it to the exact manufacturer figure. If your system has lost charge slowly through normal seepage, that restores cold air and is all it needs.

But if there is a genuine leak, a regas will only last a few weeks before the refrigerant escapes again. Refrigerant is expensive and releasing it is illegal, so we use leak-detection dye or an electronic detector to find the source first, then advise whether a regas will hold or whether a seal or component needs replacing.

Signs your air con needs a look

Weak or warm airflow, a musty smell when you first turn it on, strange noises when the air con engages, or windows that are slow to demist all point to a system that needs attention. A musty smell usually means bacteria on the evaporator — an anti-bacterial treatment clears it and stops it coming back.

Running the air con for a few minutes every week, even in winter, keeps the seals lubricated and helps prevent leaks. Most makers recommend a regas every two to three years, and many drivers only notice a problem on the first warm week of the year.
